Which Universities and Courses Require the TMUA?

The useful question is not simply whether a university uses the TMUA. It is whether your exact course requires it, recommends it, or offers an alternative route.

This guide summarises the main course groups for 2027 entry. Check the exact degree, UCAS code and entry year before booking, especially for joint honours, foundation years and contextual applications.

Cambridge

TMUA is required for Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics. Applicants using the standard October application deadline must sit in October. Certain mature applicants applying in January may use the January sitting.

Check Cambridge's TMUA guidance.

Oxford

For the 2026 application round, leading to 2027 entry, Oxford uses TMUA in place of MAT for its Mathematics and Computer Science courses and associated joint honours.

These include Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematics and Philosophy, Mathematics and Computer Science, Computer Science, and Computer Science and Philosophy. Standard applicants must sit in October.

Do not assume that an Oxford Economics-related course uses TMUA simply because Economics does at another university.

Check Oxford's TMUA guidance.

Imperial College London

Imperial's main TMUA course groups are:

  • Computing, including its specialist degree variants.
  • Joint Mathematics and Computer Science programmes.
  • Mathematics programmes.
  • Economics, Finance and Data Science.

Check the individual course page as well as the general list. Some Mathematics course pages describe a STEP route for applicants applying after the last TMUA booking deadline; this is not a reason to miss a deadline deliberately.

Check Imperial's TMUA guidance.

LSE

Compulsory: BSc Economics; BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics.

Recommended, rather than mandatory: Mathematics and Economics; Mathematics with Economics; Financial Mathematics and Statistics; Mathematics with Data Science; Mathematics, Statistics, and Business; Data Science; Economics and Data Science; Actuarial Science, including the placement-year version.

LSE says a good result may strengthen an application to its recommended-test programmes. That does not turn the recommendation into a universal compulsory requirement.

Check LSE's TMUA guidance.

UCL

TMUA is required for Economics and Economics with Study Abroad. Do not extend that statement to every UCL degree containing economics, finance or statistics in its title.

Warwick

The position differs by subject:

Course groupPublished position
Computer Science BSc/MEng; Computer Science with Business Studies; Discrete Mathematics BSc/MEngTMUA required, with contextual-offer exemptions described by Warwick
Mathematics BSc/MMathNormally TMUA or STEP, with contextual-offer exemptions
Economics; Economics and Management; Economics, Politics and International StudiesOptional; read the course-specific guidance
Mathematics and Statistics; MORSE; Data ScienceOptional, with test-based ways of meeting some offers

Warwick flags some 2027 details as under review. In particular, check the current contextual eligibility rules rather than assuming a previous year's exemption applies.

Durham

The UAT-UK 2027 course list identifies TMUA as recommended for Mathematics BSc/MMath and Mathematics and Statistics BSc/MMath.

Durham publishes information about reduced offers linked to admissions-test performance. Some of its web guidance still refers to earlier cycles, so confirm the applicable conditions for your entry year rather than carrying forward an old score threshold.

A checklist for your own shortlist

For each choice, record:

  1. The university, full degree title and UCAS code.
  2. Whether TMUA is compulsory, recommended or optional.
  3. Any alternative test or additional assessment.
  4. The permitted sitting and any applicant-specific exception.
  5. The official source and when you checked it.

One TMUA sitting can serve several relevant applications. You do not book a separate TMUA for each university.

If two official pages disagree, ask the admissions team to clarify. A quick email now is preferable to discovering that you prepared for the wrong test.
